About

We have spoken before about Wakmann and its unique history and interesting place in today's vintage market. While they are primarily known for their business relationship with Breitling (they were an official U.S. importer), they managed to produce a number of distinctive watches mid-century that have attained popularity among watch collectors.

Probably the most famous is the triple-calendar chronograph. A number of different variations of this watch were produced, but the larger (at 39mm) chrome and stainless case with panda dial is easily the most desirable. It's easy to see why this one is so popular, with an attractively contoured (and sizeable) case and an almost perfectly designed dial. We particularly love the contrast between the matte black dial and white outer date track and sub-dials, balanced nicely with the simple day/month windows and printed script at 12 o'clock. With so much information to present, the dial does a great job of remaining easy to read while being effortlessly cool.

Powering it is the Caliber 730, better known as the Valjoux 72c. This is a column wheel chronograph movement with a triple-calendar function. By some estimates only around 1300 of these movements were ever produced.  The chronograph starts and stops with the top pusher, while the bottom resets. The top corrector changes both the day and month (a short press will change the month, while a deep press will change both day and month), while the bottom corrector will change the date. For a visual instruction and representation of the different functions working, please watch the provided video.

We have pared the watch with a black Tiger strap from Hirsch that nicely compliments the panda dial. Overall, this is a stunning watch that would be a centrepiece in any fine vintage collection.
