About:

Wakmann has seen a surge in popularity over the past few years as collectors discover the brand’s unique history and offering of interesting watches. A lot has already been written about its founder, and his start as a distributer and importer of watches, first in Europe then in the US starting in 1946. Although the brand became famous for creating aircraft cockpit clocks for the US military, they also started to produce their own watches after entering into a joint venture with Breitling in 1947.

Today's slick Wakmann is a great example of why the brand has become synonymous with high quality chronographs. First thing of note is the oversized 40mm case, which has earned it the nickname "Big Boy". Featuring great proportions and a sleek, flat black bezel, the watch cuts a bold profile on most any wrist. Second is the stylish aesthetic, with a large white tachometer scale and minute and second tracks on the registers combined with a matte black dial, plus splashes of orange colouring on the hands, the "Big Boy" immediately reminds one of classic 1960s and 1970s motorsports design.

Lastly is the choice of hardware, as beating inside is the column wheel chronograph Valjoux 236 movement, a higher-beat version of the venerable Valjoux 23. While many different variations of the Big Boy were produced, this particular one with the powerhouse Valjoux 236 is the most desirable.
