About
As calendar watches gained popularity in the 1940s, Omega released perhaps one of the most famous examples, the "Cosmic". An excerpt in the 1949 Prix-courant General wrote: "The Omega Cosmic gives a new impulse to progress in the watchmaking industry and perfects one of the most ingenious Swiss inventions: the calendar watch." Part of the innovation came from what was at the time a slim case (the flattest of its kind for a calendar watch) and purity in design, with the correctors "hidden" inside the case allowing for smooth lines. The long lugs added to the elegant feel and suggest a larger size than its 34mm diameter would imply.
The Cosmic we have here is in spectacular condition. The stainless steel case is sharp, with minor marks of wear considering its age. The dial has been professionally refinished and looks spectacular. The blue date numerals and date hand, combined with the original brown, patinated moonphase disk, create a colourful and attractive combination. We have serviced the robust Omega Calibre 27 DL movement, and it keeps good time. All functions, including date, day, month, and moon phase work as they should.
Overall this is a stunning piece, a great investment, and a coveted addition to any collection.
