About

As a watchmaking powerhouse in the mid-century, Movado produced a lot of iconic pieces, perhaps none more so than the M95 powered chronographs that are so desired today by collectors. Designed by Frederic Piguet in 1938, the M90 (two registers) and M95 (three registers) were the first modular movements ever built, with the chronograph a self-contained unit which ostensibly made repair work easier. A quirk in the way the two movements interacted was that the pusher action is inverted on these, with the bottom pusher starting and stopping the timer, and the top pusher resetting it.

The M95 powered chronograph we have in the shop today dates to the mid to late 1940s, and comes in a generous 36mm 14k yellow gold case, which combined with its well proportioned, classic design makes this a supremely wearable watch. The original luminous dial and hands (dial has the original radium while the hands were relumed) is fantastic, and while it exhibits some age related wear presents very nicely. Not all M95s left the factory with “kris” or snake sub-register hands, and the red baton hands on this one are correct.

Overall, a stunning chronograph from a historical period where Movado led the competition in both innovation and design. We’ve paired it with a cool, elegant suede strap from Molequin.
