About

Meant to be carried in a pocket or purse, the Ermeto’s beautiful but practical design made it one of Movado’s most iconic pieces upon its introduction in 1926. The basic idea was to house the watch inside a “shell”, with two sliding halves that would protect it from dust, humidity or mechanical damage.

The Ermeto was produced in a staggering variety of case and dial designs over subsequent decades. There were four different sizes, with only the smallest intended for women and sold as “purse watches”. Larger models were marketed to men as a travel companion or for the golf course. Cases were produced in silver, gold plate, and even precious metal, while covers could come in everything from different types of leather to steel, gold or enamel. Some had simple time only movements and others came with complications such as a moonphase or alarm.

Higher end models, such as the example we have today, had a patented automatic wind system, which winds the watch when the covers are opened. Opening and closing the covers six times is enough to power the movement for 24 hours.

Today’s Ermeto is also a rare chronometer version, and comes in an even rarer rose gold plated case. With the covers open, a hinged stand on the back can be released which allows it to be placed on a bedside table or desk.
