C.J. Klaftenberger c.1860 Carriage Clock

Up for sale is this lovely C.J. Klaftenberger carriage clock. C.J. Klaftenberger of 157 Regent St., London was a noted retailer of fine clocks, and imported only the finest French movements to use in his carriage clocks. The retailer was a partnership between D. F. Aubert of Geneva and the London based Charles. J. Klaftenberger, and produced high-end clocks until about 1885 in London. Klaftenberger was also favoured by the Queen and the Prince and was made an official watchmaker to the Queen.

I would date this particular clock as an earlier design, dating to approximately 1860 or earlier, with a lovely gorge case and a large glass top aperture. The clock features an enamel dial, Breguet hands, and the original lever escapement. The regulator arm is missing the tip, but I have left the original as it is still easy enough to regulate the clock. All bevelled crystals are almost perfect, aside from very minor wear to a couple of the corners. The movement is stamped C.J. Klaftenberger and with the serial 4913. The clock strikes the hours on the hour and once on the hour on a bell, and repeats the hour when the repeater is pressed. The clock also comes with its original carrying case, which is in good condition compared to the usual poor state of these leather boxes.

I have serviced and regulated the movement and it works eagerly, keeping great time. As always there is a one-year warranty on the clock. Overall this is a lovely clock and a great addition to any fine collection. Click the video below to hear the clock strike.
